☽⌛ Beneath a Black Moon (Society of Justice Presents) ⌛ ☾

Twin Pines Mall, Midway City.
September 30, 2016.

"Come on, come on, let's hurry it up!" The adult male lead the trio, making his way past past the food court and down the corridor to the right. The stores were partially crowded for a Friday night as was the food court and the lines at the theater entrance near the exit.

The man in focus was in his mid-thirties, hefty, bald with an unkept goatee and a short temper. A city bus driver who swore he was always minutes behind even if he wasn't. He had taken home a divorced mother thirteen months ago from the a dive on Fremont where he was known but she was not. Having got her pregnant, the unwed couple tried to make ends meet for her twelve year old as well as the newborn of two months. For her that meant pulling double as the Shopmart and for him that meant... any get paid quick and off the books job that came his way.

The dubious medical trials, three of them now, didn't seem to affect him negatively and it paid in cash. Blood and urine samples, hours attached to monitors and the injection of an innocent looking vial all seemed to be worth it. He was missing the game "under the lights," one in which his nephew would be playing so that he could bring his 'step-daughter' and her mother to the Mall for a homecoming dress. Twelve years old and already the dirty blonde pre-teen needed a homecoming dress. What was his world coming tom he wondered.

"We're coming, Emil," the mother of his child replied, "take it easy." His hand was tight around her wrist in hopes that pulling her a bit faster would encourage her daughter to hurry it up instead of locking eyes with every high school aged boy she saw.

"We ain't got time, Lisa. Larry is starting tonight and I don't want to be late!" He looked over his shoulder and scowled at her wordlessly, beaming his disdain into her eyes. She looked away in defeat.

"We won't be late, hon. We got a whole hour."

"A whole hour and she still has to pick one and try one and pick another and !@#$ it she can't even get to the damn store without eye-banging every jock she walks by.

"Emil!" She protested, looking away from gazes in their direction.

He wiped a hand across his forehead and felt the film of sweat gathering. His stomach felt like it had a foot in it and his lower back felt no better. He slowed and looked over his shoulder and saw that the daughter had stopped following.

"Teresa! God dam--" There was a spike of pain behind Emil's left eye as if a needle had poked its way out from behind it. He slapped a hand over his eyes and buckled at the waist. "Oh... muther !@#$..." He looked up accusingly at the mother of his child and opened his mouth to insult her as if she were the cause of his pain. Another stab of pain, from the same eye despite his palm covering it. Lisa covered her mouth with both hands and Emil looked passed her to where her daughter and a school friend had been standing.

They were no longer there. An iris of yellow and black light swirled in a waiting fashion where the two had stood. His right eye lazily studied it and then traced the area around the disc of light. He could barely make out the spatter of blood and something that looked like a severed arm on the hallway floor near the light disc's mouth.

"What the fu--" Another stab and the disc of light closed. Another opened against the mall's ceiling and chunks of metal and concrete rained down on top of the shoppers opposite of the fountain, injuring and trapping some. The disc of light swirled like the first one but stayed on the ceiling.

Another stab, another disc of light closing and opening elsewhere, everywhere he looked. Each opened for only a few moments before another painful spasm signaled the arrival of another. It would take a few more tragic and uncontrollable summoning of these warp portals before Emil finally gathered that he was the cause... but by then the horror inside the Twin Pines Mall was already underway.

...Fire does not burn in the absence of oxygen, it consumes it, feeds on it, sucks up all the air we breathe and starves our lungs so that it may live. If fire could, it would consume and eat all the oxygen in the world, eat itself dead. There are people in the fire, people with skin turning dark and sloughing off like meat on ribs, smoke pouring out of their hair, shooting out of their finger tips. Their bodies squealing and belching as the liquify and turn to steam, their mouths open to scream too late. Their voices turn into ash that falls like snow.

A demon, looms over them all. Screaming and shouting, demanding to be heard, it stomps it's cloven feet on the ground like an angry child. But his eyes are closed. Closed shut. Until they begin to flutter open, only to let more fire pour out of their pupils, adding to the inferno. The demon snaps it's eyes closed, it does not see the fire it shoots out, it does not see the skin turn red with cracks, blood burning black and boiling as it oozes up, it does not see the smoke from the hair and the fingertips.

It does not see the ash that falls like snow...

Jolting awake from his cot, Scott Nodds looks around, his heart racing, cold sweat on his brow and on his pillow. He's breathing too quickly. Gulping in the air, he swings his feet over the cot, and holds his face in his hands. He had been taking a nap in his workspace at SanLabs, he could have sworn it had only been a few minutes since he closed his eyes and the dreams started, but the clock showed that three hours had passed.

Reaching over he took a long gulp of water from a reused milk jug, screwed the top back on and went over too his desk, wiping the sleep from his eyes. Blinking, he went over to a mass spectrometer, checked it's read-outs, nodded, and promptly forgot them. A chill running up his spine, the hairs rising on his forearms and neck, he went barefoot, deep into his lab to his locker. Beating out a quick code on the lock on the door, he reached in past his black, green and purple costume and pulled out the crystal shard.

Clearing his throat, he held the shard up to his mouth. “Hypnos here,” He said, affecting a growl in his voice. “What's going on right now, is there...” He stopped, unsure how to say it. If he even should say it. Or what it was. “Is there anything unusual happening in the city?” He finished, his unused hand fidgeting at his side.

Michael Fry awoke from a deep sleep pulled to consciousness by the call of the shadow shard and the voice in his head. <<There is death and pain loose in the city. and I feel the tearing of holes in the walls of Midgaard.>> Michael arose and splashed water on his face. More and More he noticed the boyishness was fading into the rugged visage of manliness as he looked into the mirror. "Okay okay I am awake. Dammit dont these people need to sleep sometime." The college student quickly got dressed and ran downstairs to his motorcycle. <Speak the word, boy, let me loose> "No I am not doing that until it is needed. and I need to see and record whats going on for my podcast." Frey was displeased but there was little he could do. Michael's will had grown as the bond between them had become stronger. While Michael had been taking on traits from the Vanir, Frey had become familiar with the current state of Midgaard through him.

Stirring through the night. Hayden still had troubles relaxing from working swing shifts. That, and ever since finding the enigmatic ring...things were different now. Tossing and turning in his unkept bed. Rice foubd himself all too soon seeking refuge in his single set reclining plush chair.

It wasnt long, that his eyes grew heavy and like cynderblocks interlocked eye lashes into rapid eye movement sleep. It wasnt....a flashing burner beaconed. It was the SHARD! That very object Synodic imbued and provided them all with.

Moments before, the man held resistance for slumber. Giving in to rest, an illumination interupted and took focal value. But the light danced and gleamed beautifully upon the walls and ceiling still. Cascading light silhouettes from behind the consoling of his eyelids. Each eye peaked beneath arrow slits of his face. Unaware completely whether he had been amodst dream or reality? Reaching out, from his bed. To his shard. As if telekinetically able. He radically found disappointment. However, beneath the pillow of leather wallet and car keys. His jade ring wiggled some. An endeavor hed learn later, with time. But for now, he wiped the crust from him.

Finding his now coherent way to the shard. He answered its heeding.

'' Its the Sentinel...?" He called out.

Lillac was walking down the street, taking in the sights of downtown. She pulled her purple leather jacket around her as he heels clicked on the pavement. Her black body suit hugged her curves and made a few heads turn.

Trudy had been having all the fun lately and Lilac was getting tired of being cooped up all the time. So, when Trudy wasn't looking, she swooped in and gave her a break.

In her pocket, she felt an energy eminating from the shard. Pulling it out, she looked it over and smiled. She heard the voices of the other members of Trudy's little team. This was going to be fun.

"Lilac here. Trudy's... friend. Are you boys planning some fun without me?" She asked, stopping on the sidewalk.

Each of them, aside from Michael, had spoken into the shard of purplish onyx fashioned by the sorcerer, Doctor Synodic. But unlike in times past, there was no reaction. No weightlessness that came before a mystical transport, no voice in reply. The stone they held simply sat idle.

"Hypnos here. What's going on right now, is there... Is there anything unusual happening in the city?”

"Its the Sentinel...?"

"Lilac here. Trudy's... friend. Are you boys planning some fun without me?"

The calls out to Dr. Synodic echoed inside the helmet. A deafening droning over and over. Aaryn Gordon writhed in anguish on the oval carpet in his bedroom, kneeling and hunched over, hands pressed against either side of the helmet.

>RELEASE MEEEEE< A new voice echoed over the others. Aside from the helmet, Aaryn wore only a pair of boxers, sweat dampening his pale skin. No gold cloak, no dark blue hue of azure light as became the norm when he adorned the helm. Only the relic, his humanity and the voice of doom in his head. >The black room rises, your resistance ebbs, my powers are absolute! I will strip away your mortal soul and wear your gutted out husk as a suit; my own marionette to prance and play as I see FIT!" Aaryn fell to his side and curled his legs into a fetal position. His jaw opened and closed but he was wordless as the spirit tearing at him did not allow him to speak.

>That's it, Aaryn Gordon. Revert to your embryonic memory, let your flesh sustain itself with my power. Your will is shattered and soon shall your new friends be as well!< Aaryn stopped shaking. Lying still, his eyes opened and saw the interior of the room through the angled eyelets of the helm. His body moved as if pulled to its feet by unseen strings. The golden cloak appeared from the ether, closing around his bony shoulders. A whisp of purple passed over his body, burning his skin and mottling it. Boils formed and burned his soft flesh, ornate symbols and runes formed on his chest and limbs like air-drawn scars. The purple rose from his toes to his chin, tainting his unusually pale skin before dark clothing appeared to cover it all, hiding it from plain view.

Dr. Synodic stood in the silent center of his room in the House of Mystery. His color scheme had been darkening over the course of the last few months since meeting the others in the Society but now it was clearly changed. Purple and dark-smoky gold instead of the brilliance he once wore.

"Now. Let us converge on the spot where a man tears our dimension asunder." Instead of azure, a color like rotten lavender passed over him -and simultaneously all those who has spoken through the gem- carrying them all into the center of Twin Pines Mall.

The lifeless shard in his hand elicited a growl, and Scott threw the thing back into the locker, pulling his costume out. Shooting his legs down through his pants, he quickly began setting up the belt rig, his practiced hands setting up the straps that run up and over his bare shoulders and chest without thinking. Reaching back into the locker to grab his boots, the lavender mist curled up from the shard, around his gear, and around his probing hand.

And there he was in the mall, his red hair standing out brightly along with his pale skin, bare-chested, barefoot, costume in hand, the shard dropping to the tiled mall-floor. Cursing, he hesitated for a second, before setting the boots down and grabbing his mask, sealing it into place over his face, hoping to conceal what he could of his identity from the public.

The guttural roar of the old Boar motorcycle echoed off the black asphalt and concrete of the Twin Pines Mall parking lot. It still could not drown out the screams of those inside. There was a wave of people trying to escape the deadly enclosure of mercantilism. "Oh Hel" Michael breathed out softly.

Pulling into a covered parking area, using a delivery van to shield him from any mall security cameras, the teen aged Michael spoke the magic word that wold change him into the fabulous Frey. The glow of light enveloped him as he and the Vanir switched places.

The shadowy shard had lost its power and he could not call the others but the civilians were the first priority. Panic would cause more deaths than whatever they faced inside. He flew to the exit to calm the fleeing population and get his first look inside.

Off.
Something hadn't quite connected...quite literally when applying the expected machination of Synodic's object?

Hayden hadn't questioned the curious item much prior. But this time, the protocol had failed to work properly so it seemed. Just at about the moment Rice had decided to carry on in flight. A misty drabbery of dull lavender washed over...everything around him? Psychodelic entrancement would best fit his momentary olfactory.

Dizzying out from a swirl of this sudden surrealism, into the Twin Pines mall. There, He found other familiar and welcome faces nearby. His smile personofied his comfort, though his brow heavy with contempt as to what had brought on the scene to begin with spoiled his demeanor.

Though the Sentinel had nil magical knowledge. An odd taste held his palette. A buzzing ominous feeling lurked, or so Hayden could identify? Reminiscent of that of a thunderstorms presence upon the air. The essence of portals may linger within the green and black aura that held constant about the Sentinels arrival. Possibly picking up the element, As if precautionary measure of the rings sentient regard.

"What is about? Synodic...Trudy...Frey...Hypnos?" He called out upon arriving. His beckoning to ensure the mystery was not to be an illuminated hologram or illusory mirage? Or quite possibly some dream state he had befallen?

Lilac was taking off her purple leather jacket when a swirl of purple mist enclosed around her. Seconds later, she was in the Twin Pines Mall, standing near bare chested kid, struggling to put a mask on. She chuckled at him. "That happy to see me?" Lilac teased as he scampered off to get changed.

She threw her coat onto a near by bench and walked towards Hayden, pulling her hair black hair back into a pony tail that hung down her back. "Well well well... what's going on here?" She asked. Though her appearance was different, her eyes were still Trudy's.

Magic was not her sting suit. Shake may be able to sense something, but it wasnt her turn to play now. Instead, Lilac took a look around for the others. "Where's the guy in the gold helmet?"
