Lantern Corps 101

Good morning, Class. Now, the reason some of you are here is because you have chosen to play, are considering playing, or are curious about playing with a member of the Lantern Corps in RP. My name is Dr. Drake Green and I am here to help you, not only understand what the Lantern Corps can do, but how you can help be better at RPing with or as one of us.

Now, for starters, DCUO currently allows us to play as 3 of the 8 factions of the Lantern Corps. Green, Yellow, and Red. However, thanks to the power of RP, you are not limited by this. The reason I bring this up is because Lanterns are not one of the free powersets in DCUO. If you are wanting to be or see a Lantern, the thing you should know is that it has to be unlocked with RL money. So, take this into consideration if you are thinking about playing a Lantern. That said, remember that RP allows us to be a Lantern without actually being one in the Game. Still, I feel it is worth mentioning for immersion purposes.

Going forward, this post will reflect the abilities of each Corps and their weaknesses. Please note that this is NOT public record that all players just know. Most of this is kept secret by the Corps as for as In Character RP is concerned. Also note that I will not go in to the history of the Emotional Spectrum here. This is purely about how you work as a Lantern and what you should expect to see if you are playing with one. If you are looking for more info on the Guardians, War of the Light, Emotional Spectrum and history of the Corps, there’s a wealth of articles on DC’s wiki (google “emotional Spectrum DC”) for you to read and know more about your role as a Guardian of the Galaxy.

Now, before we get into individual Corps, I want to outline powers that are shared between all the rings.
1) Flight. Lanterns have the ability to fly nearly anywhere, including space. The ring protects the wearer by supplying all they need to survive in almost any situation, like humans and Space. Essentially, the ring allows the Wearer to breathe even in space. How this is done is a complete mystery, even to the Guardians.
2) Protective shielding. The Ring will create a thin layer of hard Light around the wearer instinctively when they wearer is in trouble. The impact is still felt by the one wearing it, but the amount of damage sustained is determined by the power level of the ring itself and not the emotional level of the wearer.
3) Emergency Evacuation. When in great peril, the ring will activate an emergency protocol, instantly teleporting the wearer to their corps’ base planet.
4) Increased healing. When a Lantern sustains damage, the wearer’s link to their part of the Emotional spectrum can accelerate their healing, While limbs and vital parts of the body are unable to be replaced (with the exception of the Blue Lanterns), any other damage sustains will heal up at roughly 10 times the speed of a normal human.
5) Telepathic Communication. Each ring enables the wearer to communicate telepathically with other ring wearers across any distance. All that is needed to speak to someone directly without any lantern hearing it is the two must have net before at some point.
6) Light Beam. Every ring has the offensive ability to shoot a beam of Hard Light from its face. While not very damaging to the target, this attack is trivial for it and can be done with little to no power spent.
7) Universal Translator. Most interestingly, each ring knows every language of every race that any of the Lantern Corps has had substantial dealings with in the past. Easily, the most useful tool in it's arsenal, this effect has been what helps so many Lanterns from Canon obtain the role of Ambassadors of various leagues including the JLA.

Green Lanterns

We begin now with my Corps, the Green Lanterns. Easily the most popular of the Corps, the Green Lanterns are the guardians of the Green light of Willpower. Green Lanterns are known for their ability to push through and continue on even when a situation looks it’s most grim. Unfortunately, this power comes with a price. Members of the Green Lantern Corps usually are very confident, almost cocky, about their abilities, with or without a power ring, their weapon of choice. The unique ability of the Green Lanterns are that they can push onward, still creating constructs well after their rings power has been drained and is now siphoning off of the wearers own willpower but at a great cost. Doing this is to be considered as a Hail Mary of sorts because the Lantern will only be able to produce a light shield or smaller construct and only for a minute at most before severely damaging themselves, even as far asn destroying the ring, if not killing the Lantern.

Yellow Lanterns

Similar in almost every way to the Green Lanterns, the Yellows harness the emotion of fear and have the distinct ability to see your greatest fear and create Light Constructs from them. Aside from that the same rules apply to the creation of Hard Light Constructs.

Both ring bearers are capable of an incredible power that is unique to them. Hard Light Constructs. There are some key rules when creating constructs. First of all, the ring can NOT create living things. If it grows in any fashion, the form is too complex and a construct will shatter before it even forms completely. Even when overcharged by the power of a blue lantern, it is still not possible. Life is too hard to create and sustain due to its constant shifting of particles. Constructs are normally the form of something that the wearer is familiar with. Hal Jordan was a pilot in the Air Force so he could easily create a jet fighter that shoots bullets from its mounted minigun or missiles from it’s under wings. Drake’s knowledge of Computers and Robots allows him to create robotic looking armor and things of that sort. The only limits are that it isn’t alive and what you as a Lantern would know best.

Blue Lanterns

Wielders of the emotion of Hope, Blue Lanterns are normally beings with great divine faith much like priests or bishops. The Blue Lanterns are unique in that they are the weakest and strongest Lantern Corps of all. Able to fill a willing ally with hope, they can inspire others to continue on when they have lost faith. Also, Blue Lanterns have the ability to really effect the other Corps. Able to strengthen the Hard Light Constructs to near unbreakable levels of a Green Lantern, the ability to drain a Yellow Lantern ring of its power completely, and completely destroy a Red ring, without the help of a Green Lantern, this is the extent of their power. When a Green and Blue Lantern fight together, they can use their own rings to boost the power of the other. When a Green Lantern overcharges a Blue Power ring, the blue wielder has the ability to create Hard Light constructs just like a Green would. Also, they have the ability to completely heal others instantaneously, and even regenerate limbs and vital organs of themselves or others! The strength of this power is only limited by the hope within them. This power with the ability to basically negate constructs made by orange rings, draining the power from Yellow rings, and the ability to separate a Red Lantern from its ring makes Blues arguably the most powerful Corps in the Galaxy.

Red Lanterns

Okay. I’m going to Lore the !@#$ out of this one. RED LANTERNS SHOULD NOT BE HEROES AS PER THE DC LORE! A Red Lantern is consumed by the ring and Rage fills every part of them. Thisis to the extent that the Ring replaces the Lantern’s heart! They do not have logic or reason. They have a task. Exact revenge. While they are still limited by the power of their ring, a Red has the ability to boost their own powers by simply getting angrier. If angry enough, it is possible for a red to shatter a Construct with a single blow. However, as the ring loses power, so does the Lantern. Since the ring replaces the heart of the Lantern, if the ring drops to 0 power, the Lantern’s heart will stop.

12-3-16 Edited for addition of Universal translator. Thanks, Untold Stories!

Re: Lantern Corps 101

Orange Lanterns

I’m going to kinda skim by this one since we don’t have many even using Orange Lanterns as NPC villains, let alone as a player. Fueled by Greed, Orange Lanterns grow in strength based on how badly they want something of value. Mainly, this is Power Rings or Batteries. This does not have to be limited to treasures like gold or riches of any monetary value. Take this into account when playing as an Orange. As with Yellows and Reds, these should NOT be played as Heroes… They just aren’t… Furthermore, During the War of the Light, Larfleeze killed his entire Corps to take their power… so, unless you can think up a damn good reason why you aren’t dead…

Indigo Tribe

Primarily considered to be Heroes, the Indigo Tribe harnesses the power of Compassion from the Emotional Spectrum. Its unique ability is that it can emulate any power of any other ring within proximity to it with the exception of Black and White. This is also its weakness however, that by allowing these powers into the wearer, it makes them susceptible to the power of that emotion as well. Also unique to this Corps, is the fact that their ring is not always a ring but can also be a Staff.

Violet Lanterns (Star Sapphires)

Fueled by the emotion of Love, Violet rings have several unique abilities. They can create crystals which can be used to imprison members of other Lantern Corps on Zamaron. Over time, the rings of the prisoners trapped in stasis within the crystals are infected with violet energy. After spending enough time inside, the prisoner will emerge as a Star Sapphire. The rings can also detect when a love is in jeopardy, locate it, and then create a connection to the embattled heart that can be used as a tether. Sapphires are also shown as being able to show others their greatest love. Unlike constructs created by Green Lanterns, Orange Lanterns cannot absorb those made by Star Sapphires. Star Sapphires appear to be able to teleport in order to escape attackers, while their energy constructs release a disorienting dust when destroyed. These two abilities can be combined effectively to avoid being pursued. Similar to the Blues, Violet power rings have the ability to restore the recently deceased to life by drawing power from the heart of one that loves them.

Black and White Lanterns

Now, for the record, I will not cover the Black and White Lanterns here because I personally believe that these lanterns are too powerful to be played with or as. However, veteran Storytellers have used them in the past with great success. I remember my dear Tifa in one of the most touching scenes I have been a part of… Love you Tifa. Alas, I digress. If you aren’t a vet and haven’t done some SERIOUS rps and research on the White and Black Lanterns, I would HIGHLY recommend not using them without help…
Tl;dr: study for yourself and ask questions. If it seems like too much, it probably is.

Possession of multiple rings

There have been several times in the comics where a Lantern was able to wield multiple rings. Hal and Guy even had the honor of wielding all 6! Even in DCUO RP, I personally have wielded a Green and Blue at the same time. However, I can speak from experience that it is not as fun as it sounds. For that week where the JT was being attacked by a black Lantern, I stood toe to toe with her. This is NOT normal. Wielding any more than one Power Ring essentially makes you a God. Also, if you RP yourself with all 6 or, Gods forbid, all 8, you are essentially committing suicide. The sheer level of power would cause the rings to explode and, at the very least evaporate the Lantern’s hands. However, considering that the average length an out reached arm is from the chest is about 2 ½ feet, this explosion would kill you. Simple and clean, just don’t’ do it. I can promise you that you will be chastised by others and few will RP with you unless they intend to make fun. Just… Stick to one ring unless there is a REALLY big bad and there is no other choice. Even then, consider it more…

In conclusion, The Lantern Corps are a very hard type to play as and should be dealt with accordingly. I have personally studied each Corps in detail and know the history and oaths of all of them. So, going forward, if I see a Lantern acting in a manner that isn’t allowed by their Corps (ie: Greens making HL people to act as diversions or Reds thinking rationally) I will call you out on it.

Furthermore, it's come to my attention that some people here disagree with this post in many ways. The intent of this is to normalize the powers of the cosmic force known as the Lantern Corps. If you want to be just like Kyle in New 52 or If you want to RP as Mogo or OA itself, that's on you. Use these guidelines if you wish or don't. No one is forcing you to play a specific way but there needs to be limits to phenomenal Cosmic powers. If you can see a reason why a Lantern should have something I left out and can present it in a manner that is not condescending, I will be happy to hear you out and discuss it.

Great post, Drake!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to make a character with all eight rings on each finger of both hands and he's going to be a planet like Mogo.

Hi, great post. I thought I'd add for the rings that they act as a universal translator too.
