The Reunion

Enigma zipped through the Gotham traffic. Moving at around 100 miles per hour, the cars seemed to be standing still. Well, they technically were at a stand still. It seemed as though there was always some sort of hold up jamming up the evening commute. She veered off of the highway and moved along the river, until the entrance to Underside came into sight. She slowed down, coming to a stop, then suddenly stood perfectly still, staring into space. “Incoming transmission,” she stated to no one. Her eyes flickered rapidly as she processed the transmission. “Coordinates received. Creator Chelsey is... syntax error... located? This one will proceed with caution.” She transmitted back to Frumentar. For some reason, Frumentar had thought to include a warning, but had arranged the meeting anyway. Was something not right?

The small nanotech entity turned towards the new coordinates and started to run again. She was a blur of silver as she passed through traffic now. Her entire being focused on reaching the meeting place as quickly as possible. “Reviewing data: all data regarding this ones creation is unavailable. Probable creator: unrecognized user Chelsey. Profile unavailable. Description unknown.” She arrived at the location and immediately scanned the area. It was an empty rooftop. No one else was there. “No bio-signature detected.” Her eyes flickered and she walked in a wide circle around the general area. “This one will wait.”

For a few moments, nothing happened. Then the air in front of Enigma shimmered slightly, as a stealth field dropped, revealing a woman clothed in a trench coat. Enigma came to a halt. The woman reached a hand towards the nanomachine, who backed away, just out of reach. “Warning: defensive protocols active. Scanning...” Enigma said. “Error. Unrecognized authorized user... conflicting data error.”

“Enigma CC... X43,” the woman said, removing her shades and staring at the inscription on Enigma's face with uncomfortable intensity. “Incredible. You're sentient? You left STAR Labs on your own?” She stepped forward, closing the gap between them as Enigma backed away.

“Identify.. please,” Enigma demanded, adding the please as an afterthought. She'd only just started using the word recently. This person's somewhat aggressive approach was causing her to experience another syntax error.

“Fair enough.” Chelsey halted her approach and knelt down so that her eyes were level with Enigma's. “My name is Chelsey Chancelia. Your creator.” She waited after she said it, locking eyes with Enigma as though she expected some sort of response.

“Error. User profile not found,” Enigma stated. “Syntax error.”

“Syntax error?” Chelsey repeated, finally averting her gaze in order to rub her eyes. “I deleted the user profile before I turned you over to STAR Labs.”

“Error. This one does not understand. Why would Creator Chelsey delete her own user profile?” Enigma's eyes flickered as she looked at the woman. Was this really her creator? It didn't make sense. It did not compute.

Chelsey sighed. “It's complicated.” She dropped from her kneel into a sitting position on the rooftop. “I can prove who I am easily enough, though.” She held out a hand to Enigma. “I assume your ability to read electrical impulses is intact. Brief contact should not compromise your free will.”

Enigma stared at the offered hand, but did not move.

“You're about as trusting as I am, aren't you?” She sighed. “ I don't bite.” She smiled politely and waited, hand still extended.

“Syntax error! This unit was prevented from bonding with authorized user Frumentar. Physical contact is not recommended.” Enigma backed away from the offered hand. Her eyes were flickering rapidly again. “Error... error.”

Chelsey raised an eyebrow. “Really? Well, alright then.” She withdrew the offered hand and said, “Halo, terminal please.” A holographic terminal formed along the ground in front of Chelsey. She started typing immediately, fingers flying across the keyboard with superhuman speed. After a moment, she stopped and looked up at Enigma, who was staring at her in what could only have been the mechanical equivalent of total confusion. “Everything you want to know in one easy download,” she said, waving the terminal away. It blurred and vanished. “Halo, transfer the information, please.”

In cyberspace, Halo sought to connect to Enigma and Enigma tentatively accepted the connection. She was extremely curious, and took the opportunity to attempt a search of Halo's databanks. The machine identified as H_Halo-D, but locked Enigma out quickly cutting off any further probing. Security protocols active. Transmitting program.

The data was received in the form of an executable program. Enigma wasn't always the brightest, but she knew that executable programs could be dangerous. She filed it away but did not run it. “This one will inspect this data with Shadow and Frumentar's assistance.”

Chelsey shrugged. “Suit yourself.” She hopped up to her feet. “You obviously will be returning to Frumentar,” she said trying to keep the agitated edge from her voice as she put her shades back on. She turned away from Enigma, but glanced back over her shoulder. “Probably for the best. I'm not trustworthy, after all,” she said, with a lopsided smile. “I went ahead and included a small upgrade. You should find everything on the up and up.” She walked to the edge of the roof. “Keep your head down. Don't let them catch you.” Without waiting for any further response she took off at a speedster's pace. She was gone before Enigma could process a response.
