BREAKING NEWS: LEXCORP TOWER SITE OF HEROIC MISCONDUCT

Television screens around Metropolis cut to static for a brief moment, before flickering into view on the local news station. The anchor sat behind the desk, shuffling papers for a moment before looking up at the camera.

"We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to bring you breaking news from downtown Metropolis. On the scene, we have our eye on the street reporter, Trisha Tojikawa. Trisha?"

The screen cuts for a moment before showing the front courtyard of the LexCorp Tower. A bus smolders in the courtyard, with yards of police tape surrounding it. Curious citizens have stopped to peer through the tape, though a number of the Metropolis Police Department are ringing the tape, keeping the curious citizens from getting too close. The camera is panned so one can see the whole scene; the smoldering bus, the LexCorp security keeping the police back, a white sheet covering a humanoid shape behind the LexCorp security.

After surveying the scene, the camera pans in on to an asian woman, her hand lifted to her ear, adjusting the bud in her ear and muttering too quietly to be heard, checking sound levels. Then she straightens and clears her throat. "I'm Trisha Tojikawa, on the scene of a terrible result of what happens when hero and villain meet, even in these troubling times. Now, we don't have all the details yet, but we do have two eyewitnesses who claim to have seen the entire thing."

The camera shifts to one side, capturing both Trisha and a slack-jawed looking individual who obviously hadn't seen the inside of a shower in some time. Then again, with the city in the state it's in, who had time? "Sir, could you tell us what you saw?" the reporter said, holding her mic towards the man.

"Er, yeah, yeah, I can tell you what I saw," he says, talking fast, his words tumbling over each other, as if he was nervous to have the camera on him. "See, I saw this guy in a hoodie talking to this girl in black and green when this guy all in red fell out of the sky and interrupted their conversation. I couldn't hear what they was sayin', y'know; rightminded people don't go near supers. But suddenly the girl in green launched a punch at the guy in red with the funny hat. Then they fell to fightin' and the guy in red smacked the green girl to the ground." He keeps glancing at the camera and away as he speaks, pulling at his collar.

"Then the guy in the hoodie stepped between 'em, and they talked for a while, then the guy in the hoodie threw a punch at the guy in red, who cut his hand open with his sword. Then there was a burst of flame, and the guy in blue was on his knees screaming a bloody storm. And then there came that bus over there out of nowhere, and the guy in red grabbed the guy in blue and pulled him out of the way. Then Superman was there! And he looked angry. Really angry. I don't think I've ever seen him angry. It's kind of scary. Anyways, he made all these gestures at the guy in red, who looked like his legs were broken, but I think he killed the guy he was arguing with, because when I got a good look at him he had a hole in his chest the size of the guy's sword. I heard Superman tell the other girl that was standing there, all in black, to take the guy back somewhere before the press got there. Then Superman flew away when people started crowding around. Then the cops showed, and the LexCorp guys came out, and that's how things have been ever since."

"Thank you, sir," Trisha says, giving him a quick smile which makes him go stiff. She turned to face the camera. "That's one side of the story we've heard so far, but we have another eyewitness who tells a slightly different story. But what we've heard implicates the mighty Superman in a cover-up of murder of an innocent civilian, who we've identified through our sources as a Johnathon Davies, a second-year student at Metropolis University. Now we turn to our second eyewitness. Miss, if you could tell us what you saw?"

The camera pans to the other side, where a woman in a short skirt, tight top, and wildly-colored hair stands, bubblegum smacking between her lips. As the mic is offered to her, she doesn't wait for Trisha to ask the question. She starts talking about a mile a minute. "Yeah, I saw it. S'like the other guy said, right up til the guy in the hoodie stepped between the red guy and the girl he'd just beat on. I heard a bit of what the guy in the blue hoodie was sayin'; it sounded like he was egging on the guy in red. Anyways, it was obvious he didn't have any kinda powers, cause he went down fast, and then Superman showed up. And he didn't seem all that concerned about the corpse on the ground, which means he musta been a bad guy, right? Anyways, Superman left and the cops showed up. I wanted to stick around to be on teevee. HI MA!"

Trisha yanks the mic away from the bubblegum-smacking girl, the camera focusing on her. Behind her, both the eyewitnesses begin to make faces like immature children. "There you have it. A citizen was killed by one of the new heroes running around Metropolis. Was it a case of self-defense, or a horrible miscarriage of justice? We were unable to contact the hero in question, the Red Spider, but were told he did not wish to comment. We'll stay here on the scene and bring you more information as we have it."

"Thank you, Trisha," the anchor says as the screen switches back to the studio. "This is certainly an interesting situation. We will keep you up to date on all the information that comes out of this situation as we get it. Stay tuned."

And then the televisions screens return to their programming, as if nothing had happened.

BREAKING UPDATE

"We interrupt your regularly scheduled program for this breaking report."

Television screens around Metropolis flicker for a moment before revealing a news desk, the haggard-looking anchor staring up at the camera and shuffling the papers in his hands. "Good evening. We apologize for interrupting your regular programming, but pursuant to the events of earlier, we have been contacted by the Justice League of America. We go live now to their statement."

The screen is overtaken by another image; a bar appears in the bottom left corner, the words 'LIVE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE WATCHTOWER' scrolling across it. A Sentinel of Magic Warden stands there, big and bulky, straining the cyan-and-white fabric that makes up his suit, his face covered by a latex mask.

"Regarding the incident at LexCorp Tower, no civilians were involved. The citizen thought to have been killed, Johnathon Davies, has been found alive and well at Metropolis University. After questioning Mister Davies, we have determined that he was not involved in the deliberate act of terrorism perpetrated at LexCorp.

"Furthermore, League records show Superman as having been in the Watchtower at the time of his supposed appearance in downtown Metropolis. The Red Spider has been cleared of any suspicion of misconduct, and an official written apology has been issued to the hero. We ask all citizens to look kindly upon these new heroes, and not to be so quick to jump to conclusions.

"Pursuant to that end, LexCorp has generously allowed us to examine the site to ensure that no misconduct was handled. We found a specific signature involved in the attack; the psychokinetic signature of Brainiac. This apparent plot to drive a wedge between hero and villain so as to weaken our might against his invasion only serves to weaken us as a whole. We must stand strong against--"

The feed goes blank, the screen turning black. A moment later, it flashes to the front of the Midtown MPD station. Citizens are screaming and fighting against the few guards stationed outside, trying to push their way in. The camera holds the view, with the reporter Trisha Tojikawa off to one side.

"I'm standing here in front of the Midtown police department where citizens have been whipped into a frenzy, attempting to break through the doors. We have been unable to get any coherent comments out of these frenzied citizens, but they seem to be chanting a slogan." Trisha tilts her head to the side, listening. "I believe they are chanting 'down with the heroes, down with tyranny'." The reporter looks baffled, and goes silent as she watches the citizens assaulting the gates. "Are they stupid?" The comment is picked up by the mic, but it's obvious Trisha didn't mean for the audience to hear that.

She gets hold of herself after a few moments, turning to the camera and lifting the mic again. "As far as we can determine, there was another disturbance in Centennial Park today, this one involving Supergirl. According to eyewitness reports, Supergirl was seen assaulting a citizen, which drove the crowd into a frenzy. Red Spider, the hero involved in yesterday's incident, appeared, during which there was a tussle with two other citizens, which he lost, and the citizens swarmed the police station afterwards. I'll try to keep you updated in the studio as this potentially volatile situation escalates."

The live feed from the MPD fades, returning to the anchor behind his desk. A faintly sick look is on his face as he recites the words that every newsviewer hates to hear. "We will continue to provide updates as this situation unfolds. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming."

Re: BREAKING NEWS: LEXCORP TOWER SITE OF HEROIC MISCONDUCT

"Welcome to the Daily Planet Live Nightly News. We start off tonight with an exclusive interview with the hero involved in the most recent uprisings in Metropolis. Recently cleared of murder charges, and now believed to be involved in the inciting of a riot against the police and the Justice League, the Red Spider comes clean to our own Trisha Tojikawa."

As viewers tune in, the find the familiar face of Trisha on the screen, and across from her was the masked face of the Man of the Hour, the hero Red Spider. Trisha welcomes him to the studio and begins her interview promptly. "Tell me, Spider, what exactly happened in front of LexCorp?"

"Well, Miss Tojikawa, I'd recently arrived in Metropolis and came upon the scene of what looked like a mugger fighting his attempted victim. The situation shortly resolved itself, it seems, with the two of them killing each other. I was much too stunned to do anything, as I'm not accustomed to such..brutality. The next thing I know I'm fightin' some green-eyed harlot because she wants ta kill Superman. She attacked, and I fought back, and overpowered her with a few spells. Girl's tough as nails though. Then this pipsqueak starts tryin' ta provoke me into hurting him. I ain't got the slightest notion of why, nor did I really care since I refused. He threw a punch and I blocked it with the broad side of my sword, then he grabbed it and cut his own hand open, can you believe that?"

"Wait, so you expect us to believe he wounded himself?"

"Did y'all expect me to believe everyone in this city is sane?"

"Good point. Please continue?"

"Well, he yelped out after he cut his hand, and when I dismissed my sword, he screamed in pain. It was the oddest thing, really, since my dismissal spell is mostly cosmetic in appearance." He holds out his hand and his sword appears in a plume of fire. "Here, touch it." Trisha cautiously reaches out and touches the blade, which vanishes again in the same plume of fire.

"I didn't feel a thing!" She proclaims, amazed.

"'Course not. Well, I heard a bus comin at me from behind, which ain't hard to do, let me tell ya. So I grab his arm and make a powered leap up to get us both out of the way, burnin my legs real bad in the process. When I come down, I can't move 'em and he's suddenly got a hole in his chest. Now, if this was all a Brainiac illusion, then it's a hell of a good one."

"And what about the situation yesterday, in Centennial Park?"

The Spider stops for a moment, looking almost confused. "Oh, oh, with Supergirl. Well, I came down and saw someone fightin' her, and I knew I had to do somethin'. It ain't right, you know, pickin' on a girl, even if she is Kryptonian. So I raised a barrier to keep the citizenry safe and got Supergirl out of the way. Then some other girl came up and tried to hurt her, fought me, then backed off. I used my last good teleportation spell to send Supergirl to safety before some pipsqueak jumped me." He stops again, suddenly deep in thought. "You know, he looked an awful lot like the so-called illusion done by Brainiac."

"Do you think Brainiac might've been behind the attack?"

"It is distinctly possible. It was unusual though. The illusion in front of LexCorp didn't have any substance to it, but the boy at the statue did."

"Substance?"

"Well, everything in the universe has a certain feel to it. Mind-readers can pick up brainwaves, dogs can smell something's scent, along those lines. But the boy from yesterday felt like..a huge soul spread across the world and compressed into that little bit of skin. It was weird."

"Red Spider, given your involvement in the two events, do you worry of any sort of repercussion from the law or the Justice League? Even Brainiac himself?"

"Well.." Spider rolls up a sleeve and shows a gold bracelet with the Justice League insignia. "I'm already being monitored by the League and the Science Police. They've taken me off active duty, and I'm not to engage in any heroics alone. I'm basically a dog on a leash, ma'am. But that aside, I'll have to abide by the decision of the powers that be."

"Thank you for your time, Red Spider. May we contact you another time for another sit down?"

"Sure. I would like to add one thing though?"

"Go ahead."

"There's a message from the boy from yesterday. He tried to make it sound important, but I can't place it. If he wants it delivered so badly, he probably shouldn't beat the messengers."

"I see. Well, again, thank you. Back to you, John." And thus the news continues on without further mention.
