Canons That You Shouldn't Play

I notice that this could be a recurring problem in the future, and to prevent anyone from getting mad because they are told it's a bad idea to play as these characters, I think it would be good to make a list here for reference. At best, these characters should not be played by any one person in particular, but rather used to further a story for RP. Unless that's not allowed either...

-Superman
-Batman (Bruce and Terry)
-Wonder Woman
-Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
-Flash (Barry, Wally, and Bart)
-Captain Marvel (Billy Batson)
-Lex Luthor
-Joker
-Circe
-Sinestro
-Atrocitus
-Black Adam
-Isis
-Brainiac
-Trigon
-Nekron
-Anti-Monitor
-Doomsday
-Darkseid
-Metron
-Martian Manhunter
-Highfather
-Spectre
-Phantom Stranger
-Mogo
-Ranx
-Parallax
-Krona
-Any Guardian of Oa
-Vandal Savage
-Deadman
-Black Flash
-Cyborg Superman
-The Greek Gods
-Mongul
-General Zod
-Deathstroke

If you think I need to add a character or remove one, let me know and I'll make the necessary changes. Also, here's some points as to why it is a bad idea to roleplay as any of these canons. Credit goes to Mithrilfist for these:

1. For the most part, people who have attempted to play any of the JSA or LoD leadership have either wanted to come in and godmod, or simply do not know the character well enough to have it be believable. It takes an intimate knowledge of, say, Batman, to pull of the personality and weight of their presence. He's fear and intimidation incarnate. Not many people can write that believably.

2. There is a lot of interaction with canon cameos over the years in a lot of our characters. So your character, as a canon, would HAVE to be familiar with several original characters and events.

3. Canon characters are extremely limited on personal input. You can't alter their background, abilities, and relationships without inciting confusion and anger from the community and that particular character's fanbase.

4. It would take a considerable amount of time to make any of the longtime members of the community (now that's a general term, I consider myself a longtime member, and I'm by no means a founder), take you seriously in the role. They'd ignore you or not interact with your character until you proved yourself. I'm guilty of this myself, and with good reason. See reason 1!

Might as well add Ranx and Parallax too if we're going as far as Mogo.

Re: Canons That You Shouldn't Play

I think you need to be careful with telling people what canon characters they should and should not play.

What is this list based on? Powerlevels? how well they are known? It just seems REALLY Arbitrary when we have people rping Galatea (heh that's me), Supergirl, Batgirl, Deathstroke, Raven, e even have people RPing Death, Dream, etc. Those are all well known chars people RP.

I can see limiting the list to say.. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Joker, Circe and Lex, only due to them being your main contacts, and obviously things like the Anti Monitor, but I just get real hesitant in limiting people's RP potential.

I think we should give people a chance, see how they RPed. When I began rping as Galatea for instance people HATED IT. I remember seeing all the comments in RP chat, but I managed to show i'm not half bad and people now accept her.

Re: Canons That You Shouldn't Play

When I made the list, it was based on the canon's role in comic book lore. Canons like Sinestro, Nekron, and Atrocitus own their own lantern Corp so anyone who plays as them gets the final say in anyone playing as a member of either corps.

I was iffy about Aquaman and the Hawks and a few of the lanterns like John and Kyle, so I left them out of the list. Reason Hal is on it is because of how big of a role he plays in the DC Universe.

Barry and Wally are overpowered on their own, almost every vs match I've seen online involves them winning by one of three ways, if not all three: Speed Blitz, Speed Force Dump, and BFR. Martian Manhunter on the other hand could be seen as pretty much winning hands down every battle via TP or phasing. Miss Martian is iffy, as I'm not familiar with her entire character, so she remains off of the list.

Brainiac's actions have played major parts in both the current DC Universe and possibly several roleplays here due to his involvement in the game's story mode, so you'd have to be here since the beginning of the community to play someone like him.

As for kryptonians like Supergirl, Power Girl, and Galatea, they aren't first tier powerhouses like Superman, they have flaws on their own, and can be used in RP to create more stories for us to get familiar with the characters. However, if one of the moderators or admins thinks that one of the characters can be roleplayed on here, I'll remove them. Matter of fact, Orion might be doable, for so now I'll remove him from the list.

Galatea is a tricky one though, considering she may not technically count as a canon depending on who you talk to. This is mostly because her debut came in Justice League Unlimited, which is not counted as part of the mainstream canon. So really, you could pretty much do whatever you want with her, seeing as she hasn't really been part of the mainstream canon. Or well, any canon I've seen. I could be wrong. I'm not the foremost expert on DC canon as of now, but I have a good idea of who should not be roleplayed with what I've seen,

But still, moderators and admins will have the final say on this list. If they decide a character should be on this list, it will stay there until they decide otherwise. I don't like limiting people's RP either, Tea, but I also understand that a lot of DC characters can be seen as just downright insane to RP as.

Also, any disagreements about a character listed should be discussed in a civil manner, so we can decide whether that character deserves to be on here or not.

AU characters are gonna be tricky though, as they may not follow the same rules as the canons listed above, so we may need to figure that out too, like if someone makes an AU Batman. There may be a few loopholes for canon characters.

This list seems pretty solid to me. I would almost argue Captain Marvel, except when I consider him the same as Superman, if not more powerful. He has no weaknesses, at all.

The planets are obvious, as are the most major villains like Sinestro, Attrocious, and of course... Brainiac.

This is only a guideline. Remember that and know that as admin or mods, we cannot control what people make in game. We can suggest, but we can never deny.

I appreciate the post though, so than you Beam. I should have posted this years ago, I just never thought about it. Mainly cause the community polices the characters more than I ever could.

Agreed, I put these up here so no one would get any cute ideas of trying to be one of these characters without knowing what exactly they would be getting into. (That being unneeded brutal criticism from other roleplayers in the community.) Captian Marvel's only weakness is that he has the maturity of a ten year old.

Also, I'm gonna play as one of the planets, no one can stop me!!!!!

Beam, no criticism to your list, but just a small question: why can we play as Bart Allen but not Wally West? I know Barry Allen is off-limits (original G), but from my understanding, Bart Allen is actually more powerful than both those speedsters (I may be wrong as I haven't read much on Bart relative to Barry or Wally).

Otherwise, it was nice of you to put this up. Now I'm going to put in a special request: can you add Deathstroke to the list? I ask that only because I use him so frequently as an NPC or Cameo that it'll be hard for anyone playing the character to compile it all.

Wally's powers seem to have boosted in the comics aside from the Young Justice version which the writers toned down on purpose. I almost forgot about Bart too, I'll put that in there along with the killer Nintendo DS.
