Elemental Forces and their Parliaments and Avatars

A short brief on the elemental forces at work behind the lore of DC Comics and, to a lesser extent, DC Universe Online. These aren't Elementals in the sense of Fire, Water, Earth, etc but more the portions of the Morphogenetic field that permeates the universe that some heroes and villains draw their power from.

I have borrowed from comics, websites (plural) and a bit of what has occurred here in role play.
=====================================

THE GREEN: The Green is an elemental force which connects all forms of plant life on earth. Plant Elementals have existed on Earth long before humans. Former Plant Elementals join the Parliament of Trees, surrendering everyday speech and mobility, to communicate through one unified mind. This communal mind exists in the dimension of The Green, home of the life force of all plant life on Earth. The Parliament was founded and led by Yggdrasil, oldest of the plant Elementals, and almost every plant Elemental that ever lived has gone on to join the Parliament.

Each time either the Elemental Parliaments overstep their place and the balance of life is disrupted, an Avatar is raised by each element as a champion to defend that group's interests and restore balance.

The Green has chosen protectors for itself to wield its power against threats to the earth or from opposing elemental forces. All though there can be many protectors that draw their power from the Green, there is typically only one champion, or Avatar, selected by the Parliament at any given time. The most commonly known Avatar of the Green is Swamp Thing.

Poison Ivy is a noted protector but was never an avatar. The Floronic Man went insane after attempting to connect with The Green through Swamp Thing. In the New52 (therefore not canon here) Alan Scott of Earth 2 is an Avatar of the Green.

THE RED: The Red, also known as the Life Web, is an elemental force that connects and pervades all animal life in the universe.

The Parliament of Limbs are a collective body of Totems; the former Avatars of The Red. They represent the interests of all animal life on the planet Earth.

The current Avatar of The Red is Maxine Baker, daughter of the hero known as Animal Man.

Notable Protectors of The Red and beings who have drawn their power from The Red are: Animal Man
Vixen, via the Tantu Totem.
B'Wana Beast

In DCUORP lore, a non-avatar was chosen by the Parliament of Limbs to act as the 'Shaman of the Red' and was named by them as The Gorefiend. Gorefiend is a member of the villainous syndicate known as The Hoods but is often called upon to carry out acts and works on behalf of the Parliament that are far too degrading of its Avatar.

The GREY: The natural force of Mycorrhizae or Mycos for short, also known as fungus. An evolved collective fungal consciousness. At the time of the thirteenth Avatar chosen by the Parliament of Trees, a meteor from a destroyed Grey planet landed on Earth bringing this collective, fungal life form with it.

An ancient battle between The Green and The Grey led to a stalemate, with The Grey lying dormant. Fungi continued to coexist with flora as the result of a compromise with the Parliament of Trees. However, when the Avatar of the Green, Swamp Thing, fathered a human plant elemental, The Grey became agitated and returned with the intent to capture the human daughter, Tefé.

The Gray has no Parliament and its most notable Avatar was Matango, formerly an Avatar of the Green that volunteered to bond with The Grey when it first arrived on our planet. The fungi spread and then broke down and consumed Matango, adding him to its collective.

In The New 52, the Grey had elected Solomon Grundy to be their champion on Earth 2, with the Grey itself being akin to The Black there.[1]

In New 52, Matango is known as the feminine fungus, Miki. On Earth 2 the Avatar of the Grey is Solomon Grundy but it should be noted that on Earth 2, the properties of The Grey are quite different and more closely resemble The Black.

THE BLACK (New 52): Also known as 'The Rot,' it is an elemental force strongly associated with death. The decay and rotting of living things is where it flourishes, with its base being in the "Bone Kingdom" in the deadlands of the United States.

Given its ties to death and decay, The Black works in opposition to life forces/elementals such as The Red and The Green. Like the other elemental forces of its kind, the Rot is guarded by a Parliament; the Parliament of Decay. Each member of this Parliament is a former Avatar of Death.

The Black has most prominently worked through human Avatars who belonged to the Arcane family:
    Anton Arcane
    William Arcane
    Abigail Arcane

Editor's Note: As indicated above, The Black/Rot is a creation of The New 52 and hence is not yet a part of DCUORP canon. Its inclusion in this topic is for the sake of reference only.

THE CLEAR (also known as The BLUE): The Clear, sometimes called the Blue, is a force which connects and pervades all aquatic life and oceanic themed elements in general within the universe. It is intended to be the force from which a number of aquatic-themed heroes or villains acquire certain abilities.

The Clear is heralded by the Parliament of Waves, an ensemble of former avatars who now reside as a counseling order to the Clear. Though there are beings who can tap into the energies of the Clear, no known Avatar has been identified though the closest estimation of one would be the Elemental known as Naiad.

Access to the Clear can allow the user to communicate with marine life, as well as utilize hydrokinetic abilities. Those who can tap into the Clear are:
    Aquaman (Arthur Curry)
    Naiad

THE METAL (New 52): The Metal is a kingdom that gained sentience and cohesion in the 21st century, composed of mechanical intelligences of various sources

The Metal is not the source of all metal-based abilities, but only those connected to The Rithm.

The non-human members of the Rithm (The Metal's version of a Parliament) value efficiency above all else, and are relatively dispassionate in how they operate. As a new intelligence, they acted as the other Kingdoms had before them: attempting to conquer the world for themselves, until a stalemate can be reached. The only known intelligent members of the Metal are the Rithm themselves, though they have multiple robotic drones to aid them.

Those who can tap into The Metal are:
    A Calculus
    B Calculus
    C Calculus
    Omega Calculus
    Machine Queen

Editor's Note: As indicated above, The Black/Rot is a creation of The New 52 and hence is not yet a part of DCUORP canon. Its inclusion in this topic is for the sake of reference only.

THE RUST (DCUORP Canon): The Rust is the most recent incarnation of the morphogenetic field, or at least the newest to manifest on Earth. The Rust is a force which connects and pervades all cities in the universe, its buildings, its streets and to an extent its denizens both biological and machine. It is intended to be the force from which a rare number of city protectors draw their abilities. Former Doom Patrol member, Danny the Street is believed to have drawn his abilities from the Rust. In fact, Danny is the only Earth member of the Parliament of Bricks, the few other members representing city sprawls from elsewhere in the universe. Unfortunately, Ranx the Sentient City is another member of said Parliament.

Given its 'youth' the number of Parliament members is believed to be less than a half dozen. Nonetheless, the Parliament is responsible for not only selecting its avatars but also constructing them. The process requires a bonding or replacement of the avatar's biological organs with strange city technologies in a process that can be best explained as alien and metaphysical. Avatars are empowered to protect cities by interacting with them in bizarre ways. The city itself becomes the source of the avatar's powers, giving them abilities that tie them to cities and are also directly related to them.

The current avatar of the Rust is Aeron Williams of Otisburg, Gotham.
