Drake's true love

A projection of Drake sitting at a table with Ava fell on the backdrop of the landscape of Odym. The source of the projection was Saint Walker’s ring. Standing next to him was Hal Jordan. “It would seem that you were correct in your assessment of him, Hal.” Bro’Dee spoke in a solemn tone. “Even though his ring is not on his finger, he exudes Faith and Hope, nay, he embodies it.”

“Faith is a key element of Willpower, Walker. You know this.” Hal folded his arms across his chest and smiled as he watched. “Drake simply lost his faith when he lost Kara. Now she’s back and he’s returned. It took forever, but I think he’s ready to come home.”

“Do you not fear he will resent us for this deception?”

“Nah. Not in his nature. Worst case scenario is he makes us buy him lunch.”

“Understood. We shall go to him in the morning. You are welcome to rest here, if you wish.” The two Lanterns went to their pre-existing resting places and turned in for the night, only to rise early the next day and meet up again. Brandishing their rings, both Lantern Jordan and Saint Walker vanished from Odym, blasting through time and space and landing outside of the JT base in Seattle. “Should we knock?” Saint Walker asked.

>There is no need for that, Saint Walker. I picked you bith up as soon as you entered this sector of space.<

“Well, if it isn’t sexy Zexy!” Hal exclaimed. “Mind if we come in? we need to talk to Doctor Green.”

>Of course. He’s downstairs… as usual… being all reclusive and stuff… It’s quite annoying, actually.<

“Well, lucky for you, we’re here to fix that.” Hal remarked as he entered the base with Saint Walker. A few moments passed and the two entered the Tech area where Drake was welding away at his power suit. Sparks were flying everywhere and Hal finally called out. “Thinking of changing your name to Metalman!?”

This caught Drake by surprise as he jumped, dropping the welder on the ground and spun in mid air to meet his guests… with a karate pose… “Hal?” Drake asked. “And Saint Walker! Welcome to my home! Guys, please come in! Can I get you anything?” Drake rushed over to the two friends and embraced them both like he hadn’t seen them in years. However both guests declined the offer for refreshments.

“We don’t plan to keep you long, Brother Green.” Saint Walker replied. “You see, we come today with tidings of great joy. Today, you are to become a full member of the Green Lantern Corps.”

“Really? That’s awe… wait… Arent’ I already in the Blue Lantern Corps?” Drake asked, puzzled.

“So, funny story about that...” Hal started. “You remember that business when the Xree attacked and Kara was all gone and stuff? Remember how you lost the will to continue fighting for the Tribunals but found hope that she would return and things would get better? Well… we kinda lied to you and we used that whole business with the Black Lantern thing as an excuse to make it more believable.”

“Willpower has many dependencies, Drake.” Walker continued. “The most important one is hope. This is why we blues work so well with Greens and vise versa. You needed to find faith again in order to regain your strength of will, which you have in abundance. Granted, your faith was in Powergirl and your own science, but Adara is not judgemental. You have found your hope again and, in that, your will to help has returned. It was clear to us that your teaching was complete when you spoke to Ava Shalmer last night. Your inspiring words helped her to find her own will to do what needs to be done. And you did all this without your ring.”

Drake stood in silence as the men spoke to him. Somehow, he always knew his place wasn’t with the Blues. Yes, he had hope and faith and had embraced the teachings of Adara. But he was still very flawed at his core and recently, with the move to Seattle, he questioned the difference between hope and will. Though he knew the answer, he also knew it was possible to have both at the same time, not only from his time as the Ring bearer for the Green and Blue at the same time but by his time with Supergirl. The few times he did take her out for some sibling-like bonding time, they would go out for a burger and video games or a movie. It wasn’t super powered. They drove a car. It was natural and every time he was with her, he felt the hope and will the two of them possessed. “So, what you’re trying to say is you lied to me…”

“I am most sorry, Lantern Green. We only wished to see you become what you are inside.” Saint Walker spoke softly.

“I… understand… but I can’t be happy about this… unless…”

“Unless what?”

“Unless you guys buy me tacos…” Drake looked up and smiled with his trademark half grin. “I always knew… I didn’t know how but I knew something wasn’t right.”

Hal nudged Saint Walker in the side with his elbow. “told you… Now then!” he turned back to Drake. “If you would, please brandish your ring.” Without even thinking about it, Drake reached into his right pant pocket and pulled out the blue ring, sliding it on to his left middle finger. Hal approached him and placed his hands on the ring, Saint Walker followed suit. “Willpower does not ever leave us completely, Drake. We only lose sight of it on occasion and need to find it again. You have done so and on your own without any help. This is what makes you a Green Lantern.”

“During your time with me,” Saint Walker continued “you found faith in yourself and in your friends. You call Powergirl and Thundergirl your personal Power batteries and that is a great compliment that I do not think they can ever truly understand. That your faith in them is so strong it fuels your power, is a beautiful thing. Yet, you never truly tasted the power of the Blue. Have you never considered why that was?”

“I assumed it was because there was no Green Lantern to share their power with.”

“But you had met Theta and others on the way. No. The reason you never tasted the power of the Blue is because Hope was in your heart, not in your ring.” The two Elder Lanterns removed their hands and Drake’s blue ring had been replaced by his original Green one. “You always had the power to harness the Light of Will. You only needed to find the Light within yourself. That time has finally come and I am proud to have called you my student.” A tear fell from Drake’s left eye. “You cry. Why is this?”

Drake looked to his ring and then back to Saint Walker smiling. “Because I’m finally back.” Suddenly Drake was bathed by a green light and his work attire was replaced by the uniform of a Green Lantern. “Drake Green is finally home again.” He embraced Saint Walker for a moment and whispered “Thank you for all you have done.” Then pulled away. “Now, about those Tacos…”

Thanks. I really love writing but I usually lack the adequate motivation to do so. Your words are incredibly appreciated though. <3
