The Beast of Bakerline (Open RP. Feel Free to Join)

Their fear was palpable. It filled the room like thick smoke from a raging inferno. The victims shook and cowered huddled together in the corner of the small convenience store. The clerk had managed to hit the silent alarm before he had been split in twain. Each side of his body had curved and peeled from the other like the skin of a banana. This act had been the start of the terror for the customers of the small shop. They all decided to cower in the corner after one had made a dart for the door. He never made it. A machete of hard light pierced his torso sending him flying into the milk refrigerator case. The glass shattered and the body slumped. The red of the blood swirling with the white of the milk painted an abstract picture of death on the floor.

Darklight Refraction had called out heroes before. He had left bodies around town for Comet Girl. He had nearly beat Ms. Marvel to death as well as killing the newly returned All-Star. Darklight looked out of the window of the shop up at the JT tower in the distance before fixing his glowing red pinpoint gaze back on his captives.

“What do you want from us?” One panicked woman yelped. “Please I have a family! Children!” She begged. Her words fell on deaf ears. The only thing the beast wanted was a hero to tear apart. He figured the more he killed and the more destruction he left in his wake it would finally get someone’s attention.

The sirens screamed as Metropolis’ finest arrived in droves. They had been trying to catch up to the serial killer of Metropolis. The News Papers had dubbed him The Beast of Bakerline. The gruesome scenes he had left behind could only be stomached by those with the strongest constitutions.

“The building is surrounded! Let the hostages go and we can promise leniency!” The commanding officer’s voice echoed from the bull horn. The police did not interest Darklight, no it was heroes he wanted. Humans were nothing more than cattle for the slaughter to him, the police included.

Darklight approached the group of cowering cattle and grabbed one by the back of the neck. Which one he grabbed didn’t matter. Their fate would all be the same. He held the squirming woman up in front of the large plate glass window for all the police to see. Her eyes went wide as the hardlight blade penetrated her torso, extending from her solar plexus. The end of the blade dripped blood leaving a red puddle on the floor at the killer’s feet. The woman took her final two gasps of breath before slumping on the blade. In a fluid motion the body was hurled through the window out at the cops. The corpse landed on the hood of one of their cars with enough force to shatter the windshield and lodge the body half in and half out.

Darklight stood motionless staring out at the men with the drawn guns. “Fire!” Came the command. With loud pops and booms, hundreds of hot lead slugs raced toward their target. The first few to hit were small arms and the bullets tore into the Beast’s flesh. He did not flinch. The shotgun slugs had more kick though and they were able to knock the killer off his feet sending him sprawling into a candy display rack which toppled over. They had lost sight of the target now. Like soldiers at war they waited for the command to move in. The command was given with a wave of a hand from the commanding officer.

A few men took a step or two forward. One even made it to the broken window before it happened. Darklight stood up looking no worse for wear. He extended a hand and before the officers could react hundreds of small hardlight bullets raced toward them. The bullets shredded everything in their way, cars, officers, armor and buildings alike. Luckily the police had thought to clear the area or there would have been a lot more casualties.

As the bodies fell the news helicopters that were hovering in the air recorded all the footage and fed it to a live feed in the studio. Things were really starting to look like a horror movie and Darklight was the star. He had eliminated most of the cops and still had three hostages cowering in the corner. The hardlight machete reformed in his right hand as he stepped out of the broken window. He proceeded to make sure all the cops were dead. Any that were still breathing met the business end of the machete. The cowering hostages made a run for it but never made it out of the broken window. They too joined the carnage as victims.

His body count was large this day, however, he had not yet seen any of the so called heroes. He waited standing in the middle of the carnage unaware of the sharpshooter taking aim. With a pop the high caliber rifle shot penetrated his mask and skull blowing out of the other side. The impact sent his head sprawling back and his body followed. The hardlight machete disappeared and his body laid motionless on the ground as the second squad of police cautiously entered the area. When he sat up they backed off immediately hoping a hero would arrive and they would only have to keep the area clear of civilians.

-The Dark Rider-

“See ya Stacy, have a good evening.”

“Alright Maurice. Take it easy.” Detective Stacy Jones said as she walked out of the station towards her motorcycle. She stepped on it, then froze as she felt [sign in to see URL] of some kind in her throat. Her body began to convulse as she glanced in the direction of Darklight Refraction.

“Evil…Pure evil…” She said and would quickly walk into the alleyway behind the police department. She fell to her knees as she began to heave and cough smoke. Her head would seem to be trying to burst into flames, but would only spark several times. Suddenly an otherworldly scream erupted from her lungs as her body erupted in a red and blue flame, which formed a mushroom cloud rising into the air.

Her bike would change, the handle bars turning into black obsidian as spikes appeared on the rear fender and around the front light, the bike erupted in flames and revved up, flying into the alleyway.

“Ahahahhaa!” A wicked laugh erupted from the alleyway as she came flying out, leaving a trail of fire behind her which melted the street as she passed. She didn’t stop for anything, not cars or lights, and only avoided people. Even though her bike was flying, she avoided people and cut cars in half, still leaving people alive. The police and Darklight would hear the bike approaching and see in the distance a bright flaming ball of fire…. Suddenly the bike would jump over the police line and land in front of the former hostage situation.

She stepped off the bike, motorcycle jacket with spikes on the shoulders and thick motorcycle boots and walked towards Darklight. Her hands had motorcycle gloves on as she stared at the “man”. Looking closely, she had red, flaming eyes beneath the motorcycle mask.

“You. Evil. You’ll be purged.” She said. Her voice echoed like a dark ethereal angel as a chain dropped from one of her hands, her holding the other end. Seems she came ready to fight.

Some police would whisper amongst themselves, rumors abound of a "Dark Rider" were full in Gotham, but had that now showed up here as well?

Finally a worthy combatant, though there was something different about this one then the last few heroes Darklight had faced. He could feel the righteous anger flowing from the being. It radiated out from her body and surrounded her. When he saw the chain, Darklight dropped the head of the police officer he was poking at. He didn’t care who this hero was, he didn’t care if she had come from Gotham and he didn’t care what her story was. The beast only cared about the fight and her destruction. She would be another notch in his mask, another hero’s corpse to be buried and forgotten.

He spun the hardlight machete in his hand and readied the blade. She had come prepared to fight and that was exactly what he wanted. He stood motionless before her, his clothing riddled with bullet holes. He raised one hand up toward her and waved her on. He had no snide remarks, no witty come on. In fact he had no emotion at all. Those had died long ago, before he had become this… Thing.

Darklight locked his glowing pinpoint eyes on her and tilted his head slightly to the side. That is when some of the police decided to move in closer, while his attention was on the hero. It was a mistake. A collection of hardlight spikes appeared above them falling quickly. Each officer was impaled one by one and fell to the ground to bleed out. His glowing eyes never left the hero. With the nuisance out of the way, he waited for her to make her move. He feared nothing and walked toward her, leaving himself open to attack. The machete radiated energy as he held it in his right hand. He pointed at the hero as he walked closer, running his finger across his throat signaling her demise.

((I believe this is fitting for this story and this moment within the story.))

The chain rattled on the ground as he approached and it wrapped around her fists as if like magic as she walked towards him, her motorcycle helmet still on her face as she stomped forward. The motorcycle outside flared up with hellfire, creating a barrier as it was between the impending fight and the police, hopefully to keep them out of harms way,

At that moment the humans in the area would get a feeling of dread... righteous anger.... it would sweep over the area like a cloud, which would further dissuade them from attempting to interfere.

Each step left behind it footprints of some kind of otherworldly hellfire as she'd reach up and quickly try to grab him by his jacket and push him backwards towards the wall to slam him into it several times until he'd go through it and land on the other side.

IF instead he swung the machete she'd use her chained hands and attempt to catch it. The chains themselves were magic and extremely durable. They had withstood a full on attack from someone of Powergirl's strength before so breaking them would take some effort.

(wow song choice is perfect! A [sign in to see URL] song choice which definitely fits lol since Dark Rider isn't exactly some "angel" lol.)

Darklight made no motion to avoid her attack. It almost seemed as though he welcomed the strike. He was slammed against the brick wall once, twice and with the third slam the wall gave way behind him. He flew into the building followed by chunks of bricks and debris. His body landed and slid several feet before coming to a stop. The dust settled and it appeared as though the fight was over until the Beast of Bakerline sat up in one fluid motion. His pinpoint eyes locked on the Dark Rider and never left as he rose up from the rubble.

As he stood an aura of hard light swirling around him became evident. From the aura a nasty looking pike of hard light shot forth. It sped at the Dark Rider with the intent to impale. Darklight followed slowly behind the attack. He walked toward the hole in the wall that was left from him being forced through it. He recreated the machete in his right hand and spun it preparing for his next strike.

As he walked he showed no fear or hesitation. No, he was more testing the Dark Rider than anything else. He wanted to see just how powerful she was not just the power she radiated. Being a Black Lantern, Darklight was already dead. They say “What is dead cannot die.” Which made him arrogant as well as powerful. Unlike other lanterns, Darklight had no ring. He was the ring and it would quickly become apparent to the Dark Rider that damage inflicted upon him is what fueled his powers. It was similar to the way anger and rage fuel Red Lantern Rings. As he stepped from the busted up hole in the wall he pointed the tip of his machete at her as a signal that this was far from over.

(I love the pics!)

As the thing got back up without much effort, she smiled beneath her mask and would walk towards him again, only for the spear to slam into her stomach. She looked down at it, then back up at him. Slowly she'd pull out the hardlight spear and toss it aside. He'd see inside of her biker suit were flames.

Thats gonna hurt when I transform back... She thought as she would move to meet him in the hole. Her chain fell to the side and rattled as she would suddenly begin to run towards him. As she did if he swung his machete she'd attempt to block it with the chain, looking him dead in the eyes. It would be a battle of wills as she didn't fear him. Even if he began to overpower her, the chain would light up in a blaze of fire as she'd try to kick him in the chest and send him flying backwards, if he didn't dodge the kick the chain would fly towards his neck to wrap around it.

“Your reckoning is at hand...” her ethereal voice said.

Her kick hit true and once again he sprawled back into the building. This time he landed on his feet. Mere seconds later the burning chain wrapped around his neck. This was perfect. Not only did the kick cause damage which he converted into energy but the continual burning of the chain fed him as well.

Darklight wrapped his off arm around the chain several times and yanked, attempting to pull the Dark Rider toward him. If Successful he would use his machete to pierce her body again. Their eyes never left one another and at that moment nothing in the world mattered to either of the combatants but each other. There was no building, no city, no people and no universe. Only they existed and nothing mattered but the fight. The world could collapse around them and neither would have broken the stare they had for the other.

Meanwhile a brave reporter and his camera man had snuck past the police and entered the combat zone. They had avoided the fire by taking the fire escape of a building and using the roof to cross to the other side. They were not far from the fray when the reporter started.

“As you can see behind me, there is a battle raging between two skull faced combatants. So far this seems to be a stalemate. Police have cordoned off the area and the female, who is believed to be the Dark Rider from Gotham, put up her own barriers to help keep people safe. Sources say the male, unknown, combatant has killed at least seventeen people so far. Ten of which were officers in the MPD.” He says to the camera.

Her strength was amazing, but she saw an opportunity here, it would hurt, badly most likely, but this would be her chance to end this being. As he yanked her towards her and impaled her, his hardlight machete would be struck with intense, magical hellfire as she stared into his eyes.

“Look into my eyes… feel the weight of those you’ve wronged… Prepare for your penance…” her eyes would begin to glow brightly as she kept her eyes locked with him. If he had a soul, he’d feel every wounding, every murder he had ever committed suddenly scorch said soul as all the beings he’d killed over his existence would come back to harm him in the same way.

The reporter may even capture what looked like…wraiths flying around wailing wildly as she would keep the gaze locked with hers.

Of course if he had no soul... well this could end badly for her.

Darklight had no soul. Being the Black Lantern, undead, thing that he is he had lost his soul when he died. To be honest, he didn’t have much of one even when he was alive. The Penance Stare would not have the effect that the Dark Rider had hoped. Instead of burning his soul in torturous hell fire, he became infatuated, no enthralled. He watched one by one each of his kills stemming back from his first as a small boy. He got to relive each murder one after the other from her stare. It showed them all in vivid color. Darklight let a near silent gasp release from his mouth from behind the mask.

It was intoxicating to him. Every kill he had ever made was passing before his eyes. It was like watching a movie for him and he loved it. He had forgotten about the Dark Rider and the hardlight machete disappeared from his hand and her body. He was frozen in place reliving each of his murders and was completely oblivious of his actual surroundings. Darklight was wide open for an attack of opportunity. He was so enthralled he would not be able to defend at all.
