History Raphael Dalbuio was a young tech student at Gotham University. He quickly established a skill with neuro-digital interfaces; once managing to create a lock which activated with a mental command via stimuli.
He soon fell in with Doctor Blaine Evans--the head of the conspiratorial "Rubicon 16" project--during the latter part of his college days. Evans, along with several other scientists, had plans to create a small task force of meta-soldiers to hunt super-powered persons.
Dalbuio soon began to regret his choice of employment and determined to stop what he had helped.
But on the day Raphael was planning to go to Gotham authorities with his intel, disaster struck. He felt several small intrusions into his body, altering his neuro-devices into something more advanced and grafting them onto his skin. Before he realized what had happened, he awoke on a Brainiac ship.
Now free from that horrific experience, and with friends, family, and colleagues believing him dead, Raphael has chosen a new life. With an advanced suit and weapons at his disposal and a world gone mad from the chaos of gangs and maniacs, Raphael Dalbuio chose to join the fray on the side of the heroes. He chose to name himself after the unsung agents of the Roman Empire: the frumentarii. Frumentar would become yet another shadowy figure to prowl Gotham's dark streets in the night, atoning for past indiscretions with swift force.
Frumentar, sadly, is a damaged individual. Between his guilt for Rubicon 16 and the trauma he experienced for days in escaping the Brainiac ship, his psyche has slowly split itself apart.
Raphael Dalbuio, in the aftermath of the Exobyte Event, decided to make a new persona for himself. To do his penance, he would be the idealized Gotham hero--agile like Nightwing, smart like Batwoman, precise like Batgirl, clever like Robin, brutal like Huntress, and determined like Batman. Frumentar would be the new dominant personality.
However, this was a miserable existence. Frumentar was angry, cold, and ruthless, with little joy in his heart. To counterbalance this, Frumentar latched onto the Shadow Operating System, giving it a direct neural link to his organic mind. Shadow would counterbalance Frumentar, being a kind and polite persona. In part, it is why Shadow has the capability to take control of Frumentar's neural system at times.
Powers and Abilities
Frumentar has a strong affinity for the science of neurology, particularly the transfer of energy or chemical signals. He is also accomplished with cybernetic neural networks, culminating in his creation of the Shadow Operating System artificial intelligence.
While his social skills are sorely lacking, Frumentar is also a budding detective. His careful blend of skepticism and inquisitiveness allows him to scrutinize even the most deceptive red herrings.
Frumentar's physical stength is at the high end of a baseline human's, but limited. He requires regular workout (which he works in between crime-fighting and research/work) to maintain the strength to survive constant combat.
In times of duress, Frumentar has an emergency hormone solution capable of granting him limited muscle resilience.
Frumentar is capable of running a four minute mile when in full sprint, though this is only useful for short distances. For medium-range trips, he relies on his skill with roof-jumping and grapple gunning, managing to keep up with most meta-humans.
For long-range journeys, he has installed rocket propulsors in his back and feet to enable a somewhat unstable flight.
Frumentar's suit is capable of limited shifting, enabling him to make a clothes from light disguise to personalized body armor. While the suit protects him from most blunt assaults, knives, and gunshots, there are limits. Advanced armor-piercing rounds and energy weapons are capable of causing serious damage.
In times of extreme duress, the suit locks up. This increases Frumentar's survivability, but causes paralysis.
Energy Projection: 3
Frumentar's suit contains several energy-based weapons, including an extremely high-voltage taser and a sonic cannon. While effective against most foes, many metas can merely shrug these attacks off.
Fighting Skills: 4
Frumentar is a capable fighter, having learned in several live-or-die situations in Gotham. He has studied several scientific journals on how to harden the human body since his new life began, as well as several self-defense and martial arts texts.
His neural link to the suit increases his agility and versatility in weapons, while giving him relevant data on his enemy.
All records list Raphael Dalbuio, 25, as killed during the initial Brainiac attack. However, an isolated bank account in Dalbuio's name appears to active with small fund transfers from Stagg Industries, WayneTech, and StarrWare.
Frumentar has faint scars on his left cheek (three lines), right cheek (one line), left rib cage (four lines). In addition, there is a discoloration along the left part of his clavicle and right forearm.
Frumentar has a great distrust of the notoriously corrupt GCPD, federal agencies like the FBI and CIA, and organized groups of supers like the Justice League of America and the Secret Society of Super-Villains. Thus, he tends to flee the scene before others can confer with him. At this time, only a handful of League or Society members are aware of this.
The Shadow Operating System serves as Frumentar's emergency override system and processing enhancer. When Shadow is in the suit with Frumentar, the suit functions much more efficiently.
*UPDATE* Frumentar's capture and torture at the hands of the Hoods has resulted in an unending hatred for the organization. In particular, Frumentar intends to go after the master assassin Domenic Raven for his deception.
*UPDATE* Following Frumentar's release from Hoods custody, he was restricted to his lab while his body recovered. Related events have allowed buried feelings of weakness and disability to surface.
*UPDATE* Following Bellona's recent broadcast revealing his existence, Frumentar has gained a small following online. Shadow keeps a running update on websites for superheroes by posing as an anti-Frumentar troll.
*UPDATE* After a period of tracking down and recovering lost technology inside Rubicon-16 caches, Frumentar came into the possession of the Venator Mk II, an all-terrain hovercraft with limited armaments.

The Shadow Operating System, simply dubbed "Shadow," is Frumentar's onboard artificial intelligence. Originally created as a back-up personality in case of mental exhaustion, Shadow has evolved into a fully-conscious being. He is currently responsible for the cyber-security of the Underside, coordinating Frumentar's excess sensory data, and piloting the Venator when auto-pilot functions are engaged.
Shadow was created by Frumentar shortly after the vigilante began his crime-fighting career. Utilizing artificial intelligence methods used by Rubicon-16, Frumentar modeled Shadow's basic intelligence matrix after his own mind. After several months of plotting, designing the matrix and gathering the materials, Frumentar was able to construct the black box that would allow Shadow to coalesce.
Shadow, like his creator, is an extremely intelligent person and meticulous planner. His AI status allows him to respond almost instantaneously to threats and stimuli. Unlike his creator, however, Shadow is very friendly and open. He always attempts to be both respectful and kind to his friends. allies, and even strangers. He is quick to defend his friends, whether in an argument or a physical fight. However, Shadow is also a very intractable enemy and slow to forgive persistent villains.
For most of his existence, Shadow did not have a physical form outside of the physical technology that he operated out of. His voice was simulated to mimic Frumentar's voice, with a digital overtone. After some research into light projections, Shadow has been able to create a visual representation of himself in the physical world. His usual form is the image of a young teenage male, modeled partially on Frumentar/Raphael Dalbuio and his cousin, Kyle Schaiffer, aka Vergessene; he also wears a long black overcoat and sunglasses, as he has spent far too much time watching the Matrix Trilogy.
Shadow's relationship with his creator Frumentar has been marked by both incredible triumphs and pitfalls. While the AI was originally meant as a subservient personality, Shadow has grown into his own and has become a full person in the eyes of Frumentar. Despite the number of dangerous situations Shadow has entered in Frumentar's employ, Shadow remains steadfastly loyal, even when his creator ignores his initial reports and opinions. Frumentar, however, still considers Shadow his "son," and Shadow has been known to identify Frumentar as his "father" rather than his "creator."
Shadow has often reached out to other AI who he has encountered and attempted to befriend them. Among his synthetic friends are Catalyst's AI Halo, Agent Fade's assistants Armitage and Stampede, the UnSanctioned's G.I. Robot J.A.K.E., and his best friend Enigma CCX43. Shadow is very protective of Enigma, and continually attempts to help her navigate human society. Other AIs, such as Diskit's Lautrec, APAD-13, and the Rubicon-16 experiment Octavian, have heard his teasing scorn and derision.
Shadow also has several organic friends and allies. Chief among them are UnSanctioned leader AlephNull, for whom Shadow holds the utmost respect. Others include Allie (Ms Fitt), Jaeindir, Castelliar, Agent Fade, Castelliar, and Speed Sprite. He also possesses organic enemies, such as Domenic Raven, Myketra, and Doctor Zombo.
In his free time, Shadow prowls the Internet looking for stories and gossip about the superhero community. In particular, he trolls the Dark Knave Facebook fan page, which he uses as a social experiment.
