History:
Philosophy professor Dr. Nathaniel Black specialized in ethics and philosophy of law before the Brainiac invasion and the advent of the exobytes. When his mental powers began to manifest, they were out of control, motivated by anything from academic competitiveness, the annoyances of teaching Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" to freshmen for over a decade, or just a bad night's sleep. This led to many accidents, where his enhanced mind--which in turn enhanced his body--caused disasters and harm to others.
In horror at his own behavior and power, he fell into using drugs and alcohol to keep his mind too dulled to hurt anyone. He slmost took his own life, until the Martian Manhunter heard his psychic screams and came to offer the help and training given to Martian natives as a part of their standard education. Nate took up the rigorous practice of mental and emotional discipline, using meditation and visualization honed through millennia of martian civilization, and finally reemerged as Legis, The Living Law.
